The Rise of the Bootility: A True Flexible Space

By Siobhan · 11 June 2026

Once purely practical and rooted in utility, the modern bootility has evolved into something far more considered — a space that is as beautiful as it is functional.

When expanding or reconfiguring a kitchen, it's often not just about gaining space, but about using what remains more intelligently. By subtly adjusting layouts — borrowing a little space here or there — we can create rooms that work harder. The bootility is one such evolution: a natural extension of the kitchen, designed to reflect the way we live today.

For me, these spaces are what design dreams are made of. A well-designed bootility is a true workhorse, seamlessly linking indoor and outdoor living. It acts as a transition zone — a place to step in from the outside world, remove muddy boots, hang coats, and restore order before entering the home.

But it doesn't stop there. Bootilities often double as pet-friendly zones, with dedicated areas for feeding and washing. Over the years, I've designed everything from bespoke dog showers to integrated pet beds hidden within sleek cabinetry. These spaces truly deliver on both practicality and style.

Alongside this, we're seeing the return of the scullery — reimagined for modern living. Think of it as an “overspill kitchen,” perfect for those who love to host. With an additional dishwasher, prep area, and waste zone, it keeps the main kitchen clutter-free while supporting the flow of entertaining.

And then, of course, there's laundry.

I can confidently say that no appliance has transformed my daily routine quite like the tumble dryer. When planning a utility space, layout is everything. Positioning the washing machine and dryer side by side — and ideally raised — creates a far more ergonomic and efficient setup.

Above the worktop, a hanging rail allows clothes to go straight from dryer to hanger. If space allows, a dedicated drying cupboard with a built-in dehumidifier is a real luxury. And if you can incorporate a storage bench too, even better.

Organisation is key in these often compact spaces. Thoughtful additions such as pull-out laundry baskets, integrated drying racks, and concealed storage keep everything in its place. Wall-mounted appliances can be neatly tucked behind doors, while a designated charging station for cordless tools adds another layer of convenience.

And let's not forget the essentials — a well-planned broom cupboard still has its place, neatly housing the ironing board, steam mop, and traditional cleaning tools.

Ultimately, the bootility is no longer just a practical add-on. It's a carefully curated, multi-functional space that supports the rhythm of everyday life — proving that even the hardest-working rooms in the home can be both efficient and beautiful.
